7x7, a local San Francisco lifestyle magazine, just published a
top 50 list of the best desserts and sweet treats to be had in the city before you die. Naturally, we've taken it upon ourselves to try these first hand, over the next 50 weeks, selecting each in order and seeking them out in their various neighborhoods. At first glance, I'll admit that I don't necessarily agree with all of the editor's selections ... for instance, omitting Tartine's morning buns in favor of their lemon creme tart is borderline sacrilege, and not giving a nod to BiRite's salted caramel ice cream is puzzling at best, but we're just going to roll with it for now and trust their judgement.
Naturally, I figured it'd be fun to share these adventures on the blog and document our progress in gaining 20 unwanted pounds. Last weekend, we tried the first candidate on the list, Tartine's Lemon Creme Tart. T loved it ... I was less enthused myself, but mostly because I don't care so much for lemon custard.
Coming in at number 2 were Chef Guisell's renowned alfajores, which we nabbed this weekend at the Alemany's Farmer Market on the backside of Bernal Hill. These are some of the best cookies I have ever tasted ... and I'm not usually a fan of alajores. They were so soft they practically melted in your mouth, and the dulce de leche binding the two was surprisingly creamy and not overpowering. 7x7 definitely nailed this one on the head.
Next up is Slanted Door's coconut tapioca, which we'll be trying next week. Stay tuned for more updates and pictures!
